When you think of team building, “Big Law” probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But maybe it should be.
We recently hosted our Treasures of Rockefeller Center scavenger hunt for the NYC team at Mayer Brown, a global law firm with a reputation for handling some of the most complex and high-stakes legal work in the world. And while they’re no strangers to strategy, structure, or pressure, what stood out during this event had nothing to do with the law.
It was about how well they functioned as a team—outside the office, outside the hierarchy, and outside their usual roles.
In law, collaboration is everything. No matter how brilliant a legal argument might be, it falls flat without clear communication, trust in your colleagues, and the ability to adapt quickly under pressure. That’s exactly what our hunts are designed to surface.
And Rockefeller Center is the perfect proving ground. It’s layered with history, packed with visual riddles, and crawling with distractions. The puzzles don’t hand themselves over—you have to earn them with focus, creativity, and sharp group dynamics.
Mayer Brown’s team cracked it all. They coordinated without over-talking. They listened to each other. They saw what others missed. And they did it as equals—not as partners, associates, or interns, but as teammates on the same mission.
That’s one of the quiet powers of a well-designed scavenger hunt: it levels the playing field. The usual corporate hierarchy fades. Titles don’t matter. Everyone’s input counts. A junior team member might spot a critical clue the others missed. A seasoned litigator might get stumped by a riddle a summer associate breezes through. And that’s the point.
Too often, team building for attorneys gets written off as fluff. But in reality, high-performing legal teams thrive when they can drop formalities and tackle something different together. That’s where trust is built. That’s where creative problem-solving grows. That’s where people remember what it feels like to think as a unit.
